Trevor Sorrells received a B.S. in Biology from Stanford University in 2009, followed by a PhD from the University of California, San Francisco in 2016, where he worked in the lab of Alexander Johnson. His doctoral research focused on pioneering molecular biological and genomic approaches to understand transcription regulatory networks in non-model yeast species. This work provided a mechanistic understanding of how the network architecture and molecular function dictate the ways biological systems evolve over time. As a postdoctoral fellow at Rockefeller University under Leslie Vosshall, he explored the persistent behavioral states of the mosquito Aedes aegypti, which sustain their pursuit of humans and introduced optogenetics to study the brain of this important disease vector. Sorrells' lab studies the neural circuits that control mosquito feeding behavior, particularly focusing on how these behaviors have evolved from non-biting ancestors.
