Biography

Triny Finlay is a poet, writer, teacher, and scholar of Irish, Scottish, and Scandinavian descent, residing and working on the unsurrendered and unceded lands of the Wolastoqiyik. Their creative work is deeply intertwined with their research and teaching interests, centering on creative writing, Canadian literatures post-World War II, poetics, and the intersection of genre and form with gender and sexuality in literature. Triny's notable works include the serial long poem 'Paperclip', which addresses mental health experiences and stigma, and has been awarded the Fiddlehead Poetry Prize and short-listed for the JM Abraham Poetry Award. Triny's writing has been featured in numerous anthologies and periodicals, and they approach teaching through a feminist, anti-racist, and decolonial lens, focusing on issues of anti-oppression and informed by their own experiences as a queer genderfluid individual living with chronic mental illness. Triny has taught a variety of courses that challenge conventional literary canons and confront colonial, racist, and cis-heteronormative narratives, and they have supervised numerous graduate projects across diverse themes, such as queer feminist poetics, trauma, and representations of mental illness.
