Biography

Trish Markert is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Western University, specializing in archaeology with a focus on historical and contemporary migration. Her research investigates the complexities of place, migration, and community-based archaeology, particularly within the contexts of settler colonialism in North America. Markert's work centers on understanding how identities are formed and expressed through constructed landscapes, oral histories, and heritage practices. Currently, she leads a community-based project in D'Hanis, Texas, which explores the experiences of descendants of Alsatian German migrants. Through innovative methodologies including ethnography and participatory mapping, she aims to collaboratively address questions concerning identity, place, and heritage. Markert also contributes to scholarly discourse on archaeological ethics and equity as part of the Canadian Archaeological Association’s Equity Diversity Working Group. She welcomes students interested in interdisciplinary approaches and supervises research that critically examines the intersections of migration and archaeology.
