Dr. Tyler Avis

Biography

Tyler Avis is a Professor at Carleton University specializing in microbiology, with a focus on fundamental and applied aspects of food plant microbiology. His research interests encompass microbial food spoilage and plant pathology, particularly the application of alternatives to synthetic chemicals for controlling microorganisms in crops and food storage. By investigating beneficial microorganisms, microbial plant extracts, and purified natural antimicrobial compounds as potential alternatives to harmful microorganisms, his work aims to increase food yield and reduce food loss while positively impacting food security and environmental sustainability. He employs a multidisciplinary approach involving basic microbiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology, as well as genomics. Since joining Carleton University in 2008, he has progressed from Assistant Professor to Professor, actively contributing to the field through his innovative research methodologies.
