Biography

Tyler Franconi holds a DPhil from the University of Oxford in classical archaeology and has held academic positions at the University of Oxford, University of Edinburgh, and University of Alberta. He has excavated numerous sites in Turkey, Italy, Tunisia, and the USA. Currently, he co-directs the Upper Sabina Tiberina Project, which investigates the long-term development of the rural settlement economy in the Sabine region of Italy, particularly focusing on the excavation of a Roman villa in Vacone, built around 125 BC and finally destroyed by an earthquake around AD 200. His interests also include ancient health and disease, with ongoing work contextualizing burials in the wider mortuary landscape of the Italian peninsula during the transition from Roman to post-Roman rule. His fieldwork emphasizes the study of archaeological small finds, including metalwork, glassware, and ceramics, with ongoing publications of finds from his excavations in Vacone. His research generally focuses on the economic and environmental history of the Roman Empire, with particular interests in frontier regions such as Britain and Germany. Rivers, particularly the Rhine, play a significant role in his research, and he has published widely on the interactions between Romans and the fluvial landscapes of the Northwestern provinces.
