Dr. Udit Gupta

Biography

Udit Gupta is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Cornell Tech, part of Cornell Engineering and the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute. His research exists at the intersection of computer architecture, systems, machine learning, and environmental sustainability. He focuses on co-designing solutions across the computing stack, which includes applications, algorithms, systems, architecture, circuits, and devices, to enhance performance, efficiency, and sustainability in emerging technologies. Gupta's work emphasizes practical impact, interdisciplinary collaboration, and pathfinding. He has led the characterization of industry-scale neural personalized recommendation models, shaping the future of AI hardware design with specialized systems research. His team developed open-source benchmarks and tools that standardized community efforts like MLPerf. By utilizing these benchmarks, they co-designed hardware-software systems that enable high-performance, efficient, and scalable AI, resulting in significant resource savings across industries. His research underscores the importance of integrating environmental sustainability as a core principle of systems design, identifying key challenges, and opening new research avenues. His work has been featured in Bloomberg Green, The Guardian, and CNBC. He has received accolades such as the IEEE Micro Top Picks in 2022 and 2023, as well as Honorable Mentions in 2021. His research has also earned nominations for best paper awards at conferences including PACT in 2019 and DAC in 2018. His dissertation was recognized with an Outstanding Ph.D. Dissertation Honorable Mention from SIGARCH in 2023 and an Outstanding Ph.D. Dissertation Honorable Mention from MICRO in the same year.
