Dr. Udo Oppermann

Biography

Udo Oppermann is a prominent professor in Molecular Biology at the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences at the University of Oxford. He earned his Diploma in Human Biology in 1990 and completed his PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology in 1994 from Philipps University Marburg, Germany. Subsequently, he became an Associate Professor at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, where he worked in the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics until 2004. His research career includes a sabbatical at Yale University and leading the Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC) in Oxford since its inception in 2003. In 2008, he became a Professor of Molecular Biology at NDORMS and took on the role of Director of the Laboratory Sciences Division at the Institute of Musculoskeletal Sciences, Botnar Research Centre. His research group focuses on drug target discovery, employing systems biology and single-cell approaches to investigate a variety of human diseases, including metabolic, inflammatory, and malignant diseases. The group particularly emphasizes novel single-cell technologies and chemical biology, targeting primary and secondary bone cancers and multiple myeloma, with a key research focus on epigenetic mechanisms.
