Biography

Ula Y. Hwang, MD, MPH, is a professor in the Department of Population Health at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and serves as the Medical Director for Geriatric Emergency Medicine. With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Hwang has dedicated her career to improving emergency care for older adults, particularly those living with dementia. She was inspired to focus on this vulnerable population after witnessing the impact of crowded conditions in emergency departments (EDs) on patient care during her early career. Dr. Hwang has co-led the development of the 2014 Geriatric ED Guidelines, which have been endorsed by national EM Geriatrics organizations and form the basis for the ACEP’s Geriatric ED Accreditation program. She is currently the co-Principal Investigator of the Geriatric ED Collaborative (GEDC), a national initiative supported by the John Hartford Foundation to enhance geriatric emergency care. Her research interests center on generating evidence-based practices to optimize emergency care for older adults with dementia. In her personal life, she enjoys long walks with her husband and traveling with her kids and family, often exploring new restaurants.
