Ulrich (Uli) Wiesner studied Chemistry at Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Germany, and University of California, Irvine, CA, where he earned his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry in 1991. He worked at the Max-Planck-Institute for Polymer Research (MPI-P) in Mainz, focusing on holographic information storage in polymer liquid crystals. After a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at E.S.P.C.I. in Paris, France, where he investigated local dynamics and mechanical property correlations in polyesters, he returned to MPI-P in 1993 to complete his Habilitation. Wiesner received tenure in 1998, working on block copolymers and oscillatory shear block copolymer ionomers. He joined Cornell University’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering in 1999, became a tenured Associate Professor in 2005, and later a Full Professor in 2005 and Spencer T. Olin Professor of Engineering in 2008. His work focuses on polymer science and inorganic/solid-state chemistry, aiming to develop multifunctional nanomaterials for applications in energy conversion and storage, clean water, and nanomedicine. He co-directs the MSKCC-Cornell Center for Translation Cancer Nanomedicine, one of the NCI-funded Centers of Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence.
