Ulrich (Uli) Wiesner studied Chemistry at the University of Mainz, Germany, and UC Irvine, CA, where he obtained his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry in 1991. He worked at the Max-Planck-Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz, focusing on holographic information storage in polymer liquid crystals. After a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at E.S.P.C.I. in Paris, he returned to MPI-P in 1993 and completed his Habilitation, achieving tenure in 1998. His research on block copolymers and oscillatory shear block copolymer ionomers led him to join Cornell University in 1999 as a faculty member in Materials Science and Engineering. He became a Full Professor in 2005 and was named the Spencer T. Olin Professor of Engineering in 2008. His work focuses on the interface of polymer science and inorganic chemistry, aiming to create multifunctional nanomaterials for applications in energy conversion, storage, and nanomedicine. In 2015, he co-directed the MSKCC-Cornell Center for Translational Cancer Nanomedicine, a center of excellence funded by the National Cancer Institute. His research interests include self-assembly of soft polymeric materials and solid-state materials to create novel hierarchical hybrid materials, expanding upon principles that mimic natural structures for innovative applications in various fields, including biomedicine and energy systems.
