Biography

Professor Ulrich Heiz explores the properties of small material grain sizes that fall within the non-scalable size range, determining properties based on the exact number of atoms. His research contributes to understanding nanocatalysis, asymmetric catalysis, and photocatalysis. He has developed novel experimental methods for investigating clusters on surfaces. After earning his doctoral degree in Physical Chemistry from the University of Bern in 1991, Heiz conducted research at ExxonMobil Research & Engineering Company and the University of Pittsburgh, USA. He habilitated in Physics at the University of Lausanne in 1998 and subsequently accepted a position at the University of Ulm in 2000. By 2004, he had become a professor of Physical Chemistry at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). Over the years, Heiz has been offered appointments from foreign universities, including UC Berkeley and Georgia Tech, which he declined.
