Biography

Umakishore Ramachandran received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1986 and has been a faculty member at Georgia Tech since then. He served as the Chair of the Core Computing Division in the College of Computing from July 2003 to August 2005. His research areas include parallel distributed systems, computer architecture, and operating systems, with notable work in Distributed Shared Memory (DSM) and cloud operating systems. He has authored around 100 technical papers and is known for leading projects that deal with large-scale situation awareness using distributed camera networks and multi-modal sensing for applications in surveillance, connected vehicles, and transportation. Additionally, he played a significant role in defining and implementing the online Master of Science in Computer Science (OMSCS) program using MOOC technology, extending low-cost graduate education opportunities in computer science internationally. So far, he has graduated 28 Ph.D. students who have been placed in academia and industry, and he is currently advising five Ph.D. candidates. His accolades include the NSF PYI Award in 1990, the Georgia Tech doctoral thesis advisor award in 1993, and several awards for research and teaching excellence from the College of Computing, including becoming an IEEE Fellow in 2014.
