Biography

Professor Cheema completed his PhD in tissue engineering of skeletal muscle at University College London in 2004. Following this, he worked as a post-doctoral fellow with Professor Robert Brown at University College London and with Professor Teruo Okano at Tokyo Women's Medical University in Japan. In 2008, he was awarded the prestigious BBSRC David Phillips fellowship. His research is focused on understanding cell behavior and signaling in 3D collagen scaffolds, which has led to close collaborations with industrial partners. He currently holds the position of Vice Dean for Innovation and Enterprise within the Faculty of Medical Sciences. Professor Cheema was awarded a chair in bioengineering in 2020 and leads the Centre for 3D Models in Health and Disease, nurturing a team dedicated to advancing research in this area.
