Dr. Umesh Korde

Biography

Umesh Korde is a Research Professor at the Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering, specializing in the field of Environmental Health and Engineering. His research began in 1982 focusing on wave energy and has since expanded into areas such as robotics, deformable structures, and noise-shielding. Currently, Korde's interests include the utilization of environmental energy through persistent environmental sensing and seafloor energy conversion, with a focus on nonlinear interactions of multi-directional surface waves and near-shore surface dynamics. His research applications cover a broad spectrum, including carbon dioxide sensing, propagation of low-frequency acoustic-seismic waves in oceanic systems, and the impacts of climate change on ocean wave phenomena. Korde has expertise in wave dynamics, wave-body dynamics, and variational optimization control. He collaborates with various institutions, including the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Naval Information Warfare Center. His recent research is supported by organizations such as the National Science Foundation and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and he has published notable works in peer-reviewed journals and books. Korde is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and has previously held professorships at Michigan Tech University and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. He earned his bachelor's degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, a master's degree from the University of Tokyo, and a PhD from the University of Notre Dame.
