Dr. Umit Yildiz

Biography

Umit Yildiz is a Lecturer at the University of Manchester with a diverse background in education and advocacy. Born into a working-class immigrant family, Umit began his career in various roles, including cleaner and youth worker, before pursuing higher education. He holds a degree in Modern European History and Politics from the University of Bradford, as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in Education from the University of Leeds. With over fourteen years of teaching experience, Umit has specialized in Citizenship education, actively engaging with students in a large, multicultural Further Education college in West Yorkshire. He has focused his research on the impact of significant events, such as the September 11 attacks, on Muslim and non-white communities, particularly within the context of anti-Muslim racism and British values. Umit is a proponent of transformative radical pedagogy and anti-racist teaching, leading initiatives like the Anti-Racist Education Network at the Manchester Institute of Education. His work aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially in advancing equality and diversity in education.
