Biography

Umran Inan is a Professor Emeritus in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. His research primarily focuses on the Earth's ionosphere and upper atmosphere through measurements taken from multiple remote sites, including Antarctica, Alaska, and the continental United States. Professor Inan is particularly interested in ionospheric effects caused by lightning discharges and has discovered phenomena linked to electrical discharges and luminous glows at high altitudes during thunderstorms. His work encompasses the study of the physical processes within Earth’s near-space environment, space weather effects impacting communication signals, and electrodynamic coupling between the ionosphere and magnetosphere. He also investigates wave-induced precipitation of particles from radiation belts and cyclotron resonant interactions of electromagnetic waves with energetic electrons. Additionally, he has contributed to the development of ultra-low-power miniaturized radio receivers intended for remote polar operations using micro-satellites.
