Professor Dr. Urban Lindgren

Biography

Urban Lindgren is a Professor of Cultural Geography at Umeå University. His research focuses on how geographical conditions interact with and influence people, businesses, and society. His doctoral dissertation, completed in 1997, investigated the impact of large industrial investments on local population and employment development. Lindgren has broadened his research since then, focusing on workforce mobility's significance for business competitiveness and knowledge exchange. He has contributed to the development of theories regarding regional differences in economic growth and innovation capacity. He emphasizes that economic geography must study not only firms but also populations, reflecting the increasing importance of human knowledge and experiences in the economy. Lindgren's ongoing interdisciplinary project, 'Life Frontier,' explores residential segregation and its socioeconomic implications for children and youth in urban landscapes. Throughout his career, he has prioritized building research infrastructure, including a comprehensive database of demographic and socioeconomic data, fostering international collaboration.
