Biography

Uri Shalev received his Ph.D. in Psychology from Tel Aviv University and completed postdoctoral training at the National Institute on Drug Abuse/NIH under Dr. Yavin Shaham in 2002. He headed a behavioral laboratory at D-Pharm Ltd. in Rehovot, Israel. In 2004, he joined the Department of Psychology at Concordia University and has been involved in research on Behavioral Neurobiology. Shalev held the Canada Research Chair in Neurobiology of Drug Abuse (Tier II) from 2004 to 2015, where his research focused on Substance Use Disorders (SUD) and the mechanisms underlying relapse. He utilizes animal models to explore how drug-associated cues and stress can trigger relapse in addiction. Recent work emphasizes the importance of understanding the brain's response to stress and feeding control mechanisms. Shalev has received funding from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation, Canada Research Chairs program, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and Canadian Institutes of Health Research. He has taught various courses including Fundamentals of Behavioral Neurobiology and Neurobiology of Drug Abuse, engaging students in advanced psychological concepts and research methodology.
