Professor Shumlak completed his undergraduate work at Texas A&M University and obtained his PhD from the University of California at Berkeley. After finishing his graduate degree, he became a National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow at the Air Force Phillips Laboratory (now AFRL) at Kirtland AFB. He joined the Aeronautics and Astronautics Department at the University of Washington, where he is currently a Professor and serves as the department’s Associate Chair Academics. He is also an Adjunct Professor in Applied Mathematics and has received several fellowships, including APS Fellow, IEEE Fellow, and AIAA Associate Fellow. Professor Shumlak co-founded Zap Energy, a spin-out company from the University of Washington that aims to develop commercial nuclear fusion technologies. His research focuses on areas such as fundamental plasma physics, theoretical computational plasma modeling, magnetic plasma confinement fusion energy, and advanced space propulsion. He develops plasma modeling algorithms that utilize high-order finite element methods to study plasma dynamics, including various types of plasma models within the WARPXM framework. His ongoing projects investigate innovative plasma concepts and stability, with applications in fusion energy and space propulsion systems.
