Biography

Urs Matthias Zachmann has been a Professor for the Culture and History of Modern Japan at the Department of History and Cultural Studies at Freie Universität Berlin since October 2016. He studied Law (1st State Exam 1998) and Japanese Studies (M.A. 2000, Ph.D. 2006) in a parallel program at the universities of Hannover and Heidelberg. After completing his legal clerkship, he received his degree as an advocate in 2002. He worked as a research associate at the Japan Center of Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich from 2006 to 2010, where he habilitated in Japanese Studies with a study on international law discourse in Japan from 1919 to 1960. He served as Acting Full Professor at Heidelberg University from 2010 to 2011 and then held the inaugural Handa Chair for Japanese-Chinese Relations at the University of Edinburgh until 2016. Zachmann's research focuses on the political ideas and cultural history of modern Japan, legal history, and Japan's international relations in East Asia. He examines the processes of cultural transfer and strategic reinterpretation of political ideas and institutions within Japan's modernization debates. He has published various works, including the award-winning monograph 'China Japan Late Meiji Period: China Policy Japanese Discourse on National Identity, 1895-1904' and 'Völkerrechtsdenken und Außenpolitik Japan, 1919-1960'.
