Biography

Usman Alim is an Associate Professor at the University of Calgary with a diverse background in mathematics and physics, having earned his Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of Rochester in 2001. He later pursued further education in computer science, obtaining a Master of Science from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2007 and a Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science from Simon Fraser University in 2012. His research interests include Global Illumination, Physically-based Modeling, Rendering, Applications in Signal Processing, Computer Graphics, and Visualization. He has also taught courses such as DATA 601 on Working Data & Visualization and CPSC 601.30, a special topics course in Computer Science. Alim has been recognized for his contributions in the field, receiving several awards for his work, including the IEEE SciVis Contest in 2018 and the Compute Canada Visualize contest in both 2016 and 2018.
