Dr. Uta Behrends

Biography

Prof. Uta Behrends conducts research in the field of infectious immunology and immunoprevention immunotherapy, focusing primarily on inflammatory, autoimmune, and oncogenic diseases associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Her core projects aim to develop new strategies for diagnostics, therapy, and prevention of complications such as glandular fever. She leads studies on children, adolescents, and young adults suffering from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) and has established collaborative research efforts, notably with the Charité Fatigue Centrum. She has initiated research projects exploring COVID-19 and Long COVID's effects on young populations. Prof. Behrends has an extensive academic background with positions at leading universities and institutions including Helmholtz Center Munich and currently heads the MRI Chronic Fatigue Center (MCFC). Her work is often funded by the German Center Infection Research (DZIF) and involves close cooperation with the Helmholtz Zentrum München, reflecting her commitment to translational and clinical health services research.
