Biography

Ute Holl studied Literary Studies, History, and Philosophy in Freiburg im Breisgau, with research stays in Rome and Boston. She worked as a publishing editor, documentary filmmaker, and editor for film and theater at NDR in Hamburg. Her dissertation on the history of perception of cinema was defended in 2001 at the Humboldt University of Berlin. Subsequently, she was a research assistant at the Chair of 'History and Theory of Artificial Worlds' at the Bauhaus University Weimar. In 2007, she served as a visiting professor at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne, and in 2008, she represented the 'Media Philosophy' chair at the Bauhaus University Weimar, where she was appointed that same year. In 2009, Ute Holl habilitated at the Humboldt University and was appointed as a professor for Media Aesthetics at the Seminar for Media Studies at the University of Basel. Her research focuses include the history of cinema and perception, the history of knowledge of audiovisual media, the history of acoustics and electroacoustics, cinema sound, and experimental and ethnographic film.
