Dr. V Yong

Biography

V. Wee Yong is a Professor in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary and a translational neuroscience researcher. He co-directs the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Program at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and holds the Canada Research Chair in Neuroimmunology. Dr. Yong received his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and began his faculty appointment at the Montreal Neurological Institute, McGill University, in 1989. In 1996, he relocated to Calgary, where his research interests focus on neuroimmunology, neuroprotection, and central nervous system regeneration, particularly in the context of MS, spinal cord injury, and malignant gliomas. He has published 208 peer-reviewed manuscripts, and his research has influenced clinical trials related to MS and spinal cord injuries, with over 12,000 citations to his work. Dr. Yong has received several accolades, including the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Year Medallion in 2003 for his volunteer activities on behalf of the MS Society of Canada. In 2010, he was elected a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, a significant honor in the medical sciences community. Dr. Yong has served as the immediate past chair of the Medical Advisory Committee for the MS Society of Canada, directs the Alberta endMS Regional Research Training Center, and is a member of the editorial boards of seven international journals. He was elected Vice President of the International Society of Neuroimmunology in 2012 and became President in 2014.
