Dr. V S Subrahmanian

Biography

V.S. Subrahmanian is the Walter P. Murphy Professor at Northwestern University's McCormick School of Engineering, where he is also a Buffett Faculty Fellow at the Buffett Institute for Global Affairs. He specializes in Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, and Data Science, focusing on predictive modeling, malicious behavior detection, and the shaping of national cybersecurity policies. His foundational research involves using AI to understand, predict, and explain the behaviors of individuals and groups, as well as developing machine learning algorithms to detect and respond to cyber threats, including malware and anomalous behaviors. A notable aspect of his work is in modeling terror group behavior, particularly in regions like the Indian subcontinent and Nigeria, with a goal to inform and reshape international counter-terrorism strategies. He has previously held distinguished roles, including professor at Dartmouth College, where he directed the Institute for Security, Technology & Society, and leadership positions at the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies. Subrahmanian has also been invited to speak at significant platforms such as the United Nations and Capitol Hill, contributing to topics at the intersection of technology and public policy.
