Biography

Val J. Watts serves as the Associate Dean for Research at the College of Pharmacy at Purdue University, where he also holds the position of Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from Ohio Northern University in 1990, followed by a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of North Carolina in 1994. He completed his postdoctoral work in Molecular Pharmacology at Oregon Health Sciences University from 1995 to 1998. His research focuses on the signaling mechanisms of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and their regulation of adenylyl cyclases, which are critical targets for many clinically used drugs. His laboratory employs a multidisciplinary approach that spans molecular biology, biochemistry, and pharmacology. Current projects involve the development of high-throughput screening assays and selective inhibitors for adenylyl cyclase isoforms with potential applications in chronic pain management and neurological disorders. He collaborates with expert medicinal chemists, computational scientists, and structural biologists to advance drug discovery research.
