Biography

Valentin R. Troll is a professor specializing in Petrology at Uppsala University. His extensive research focuses on igneous petrology, geochemistry, and volcanic systems. He primarily studies the processes involved in the evolution of magmatic systems and volcanic eruptions, and their relationships to ore deposits. His work has contributed significantly to the understanding of petrological and geochemical signatures of magmatic activity across multiple volcanic regions globally, including those in Iceland, the Canary Islands, and Indonesia. Troll graduated from St Andrews University, Scotland in 1998 and received his PhD from the GEOMAR Research Centre at the University of Kiel, Germany in 2001. He has lectured on volcanology and petrology at Trinity College Dublin from 2001 to 2008, and became habilitated at Blaise Pascal University in Clermont-Ferrand, France in 2006. In early 2008, he took the Chair of Petrology at Uppsala University. He has held research associate positions at institutions such as the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in Spain and the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia in Italy. Troll is a fellow of the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland, the Royal Society of Arts, and the Royal Geographical Society, and is an elected member of the Royal Canarian Academy of Sciences for his contributions to the geology of the Canary Islands.
