Dr. Valentina Arena

Biography

Professor Valentina Arena serves as the Camden Professor of Ancient History at Brasenose College, University of Oxford. She earned her PhD from the University of Florence in the Department of Ancient Studies and has taught at University College London in the History Department. Professor Arena specializes in Ancient History, with particular focus on Roman History and Intellectual History. She is currently leading an ERC-funded project titled 'Ordering, Constructing, Empowering: Fragments Roman Republican Antiquarians'. Her research interests encompass ancient political thought, oratory, antiquarianism, and the epistemology of ancient philosophy, exploring concepts such as liberty, democracy, republicanism, and the legal frameworks of Roman political culture. She actively engages in teaching Roman history at the postgraduate level and supervises research in aligned fields.
