Biography

Valentina Golunova is an Assistant Professor of Digital Democracy at Maastricht University. She previously worked as a PhD researcher and lecturer at the same institution. Her primary research focus is on the intersection of fundamental rights and digitalization, addressing topics such as algorithmic content moderation and the regulation of digital services in the EU, particularly concerning online freedom of expression. Currently, Valentina is engaged in research projects exploring transatlantic dialogues on platform regulation, EU's legal strategies on disinformation, and strategic litigation in digital rights. She teaches courses in Constitutional Law and European Law within the Bachelor's and Master's programmes, specializes in Law & AI, and coordinates part of the management team at the Maastricht Centre for European Law (MCEL). Additionally, Valentina mentors students participating in the Helga Pedersen Moot Court Competition. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Law from Saint Petersburg State University (2018) and an LLM (cum laude) in International and European Law from Tilburg University (2019). Before joining Maastricht University, she worked at the human rights NGO Citizens' Watch in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
