Biography

Valentina Mazzucato is a Professor of Globalisation and Development at Maastricht University, where she founded and directed the research programme on Globalisation, Transnationalism, and Development from 2012 to 2020. Her expertise lies in migration, particularly from a transnational perspective, studying the effects of migration on families and communities in Africa and Europe. Mazzucato has led numerous international projects on transnational migration, collaborating with universities across Europe and Africa. Currently, she is an Executive Board member of the Maastricht Center for Citizenship, Migration and Development (MACIMIDE) and serves on the Steering Committee of NWO-WOTRO Science for Global Development. In 2017-2024, she was a panel member for ERC Advanced Grants and received a prestigious ERC Consolidator grant for her project on "Mobility Trajectories of Young Lives: Transnational Youth in Global South and North". Mazzucato was elected as a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), which is one of the highest academic distinctions in the Netherlands. Her areas of expertise include migration studies, family sociology, anthropology, development economics, and mixed methods. Mazzucato earned her BA from Williams College in Political Science and French Literature before obtaining her MSc in Agricultural Economics from Michigan State University and her PhD in Tropical Agriculture from Wageningen Agricultural University.
