Biography

Valentina Mignosa is a research consultant for the Crossreads project at the University of Oxford, specializing in Mediterranean history and Greek epigraphy. She obtained her PhD in Greek History from Ca' Foscari University of Venice, where she also earned her Master's and Bachelor's degrees. Her academic career includes research at the University of British Columbia, where she explored the urban and social dynamics of ancient cities through the lens of epigraphic evidence. Valentina's main research interests focus on the intricacies of urban and social landscapes in ancient cities, particularly during periods of significant human mobility. Her PhD thesis analyzed the transformation of Syracuse’s urban social landscape while challenging traditional notions of the classical polis. Currently, Valentina is developing a monograph that examines the consequences of mobility on urban social structures, while also investigating the acquisition dynamics of writing among ancient Sicilian populations. She has extensive teaching experience, having lectured on Greek history and epigraphy at Ca' Foscari University of Venice.
