Biography

Valérie Dusaillant-Fernandes is an Associate Professor in the Department of French Studies at the University of Waterloo. She spent her childhood in France and earned her Diplôme d’Études Universitaires Générales (D.E.U.G.) from Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris 3 in 1988. She completed her M.A. in French Studies at the University of Waterloo in 2004 and obtained her Ph.D. in French Studies from the University of Toronto in 2010. Valérie's academic career includes roles such as a language instructor at the Alliance Française in Hamilton and a Marketing Coordinator for an environmental firm in Guelph. As an educator, she is dedicated to supporting her colleagues and students through various professional engagements, including serving on numerous committees and editorial boards. Her research interests focus on 20th-21st-century French and Francophone literatures, trauma theory, literary semiotics, and feminist approaches to literature. Valérie teaches a variety of courses, including French Culture and Literature and African Caribbean French Literature, while actively contributing to the academic community through her publications and editorial work. Her current research explores the complexities of narratives from East Asian writers who choose to write in French, examining themes of migration and cultural identity.
