Biography

Valerie Soo is an Advanced Research Fellow at Imperial College London's Department of Infectious Disease, where she leads a research group focused on Bacterial Resistance Biology. After completing her BSc (Honours) in Malaysia, she earned her PhD in Biochemistry under the supervision of Professor Wayne Patrick in New Zealand, investigating promiscuous enzymes and their role in the emergence of new functions. Valerie undertook postdoctoral training in microbiology with Professor Thomas Wood in the USA, after which she was awarded the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship in the UK to collaborate with Associate Professor Tobias Warnecke at the MRC Laboratory of Medical Sciences. In 2023, she established her research group, focusing on antibiotic resistance in streptococcal bacteria. Valerie is passionate about mentoring and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion within academic environments. Outside of work, she enjoys reading and playing strategic board games.
