Biography

Valeriya Chekalina received her PhD in Philology from Moscow State University in 2003, specializing in functional grammar. As a lecturer at the School of Modern Languages, she teaches a variety of Russian courses, ranging from undergraduate to postgraduate levels, focusing on foreign students and utilizing a functional approach to grammar. She has authored and co-authored over 40 publications, including specialized textbooks and materials for language learners. Dr. Chekalina is a certified Test of Russian as a Foreign Language (TORFL) examiner and has served as the Deputy Director of the TORFL Testing Centre at Moscow State University. Her previous experience includes teaching Russian to employees of foreign embassies in Russia, as well as directing the Russian language department at the Baltic Center for Educational and Academic Development in Riga. She has contributed to the development of a Russian language curriculum for K-12 learners and has spoken at various international conferences. In addition to her native Russian, Dr. Chekalina is fluent in English and Latvian.
