V.L. Pokrovsky graduated from Kharkov University (Ukraine) with a Master's degree in 1953 and defended his Ph.D. at Tomsk University (Russia) in 1957. He holds the highest degree, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, awarded by the Siberian Branch of the Soviet Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk in 1962. He worked in Novosibirsk until 1966 at the Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics in Chernogolovka, Moscow region, Russia. His specialization is in Theoretical Physics, with significant contributions to Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Physics, Magnetism, Superconductivity, and Superfluidity. Since 1992, he has been a Professor in the Department of Physics at Texas A&M University. He was named a Distinguished Professor in 1998. His awards include the Landau Prize (1982) for his fundamental work on Phase Transition Theory, the Humboldt Prize (2000) as a Senior American Scientist from the Humboldt Association (Germany), and the Onsager Prize (2005) from the American Physical Society for his original contributions to Statistical Physics. In 2018, he received the Landau Gold Medal for his fundamental contributions to Quantum Mechanics and Statistical Physics from the Russian Academy of Sciences.
