Dr. Valsamma Eapen

Biography

Valsamma Eapen is a Professor in the School of Clinical Medicine at the University of New South Wales, specializing in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Her research focuses on epidemiology, genetic underpinnings, and neurocognitive processes related to neurodevelopmental disorders such as Tourette Syndrome, Autism, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. She also investigates anxiety in young children and the relationship between metabolic syndrome and mental illness in adolescents. Professor Eapen has extensive qualifications including an MBBS and DPM from India, a DFT from the UK, and a PhD from the UK. She is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists and the Royal College of Psychiatrists in the UK. Professor Eapen is actively involved in various professional organizations, contributing her expertise as a member of the Governing Council of the International Brain Research Organization and the Executive Committee of the International Neuropsychiatric Association, among others. She is known for her media appearances and publications, which aim to raise awareness about Tourette Syndrome and influence public understanding of mental health issues.
