Dr. Vandana Khungar

Biography

Vandana Khungar, MD, MSc, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Yale School of Medicine, specializing in transplant hepatology and gastroenterology. With extensive training including a Transplant Hepatology Fellowship at Columbia University, a Gastroenterology Fellowship at UCLA, and an MD from the University of Illinois at Chicago, Dr. Khungar is deeply committed to patient-centered care. She emphasizes shared decision-making and actively listens to her patients. Her research interests span implementation science, quality improvement, behavioral economics, and digital health, with a focus on reducing hospital readmissions and promoting healthy patient behaviors. Dr. Khungar is also involved in national committees and has contributed to writing national guidelines on reproductive health in liver disease. Her leadership roles include Vice Chief of Collaborative Excellence in the Section of Digestive Diseases and Associate Medical Director for Liver Transplantation at the Yale New Haven Transplantation Center. Dr. Khungar is passionate about improving access to medical care for underserved populations and works to break down stigmas surrounding liver disease. She strives to educate patients and families, tailoring care to their unique needs in a compassionate environment.
