Dr. Vanesa Ribas

Biography

Vanesa Ribas is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of California, San Diego. Her research primarily focuses on race and ethnicity, migration, labor, political mobilization, and social inequalities. Ribas's ethnographic studies investigate social relations within the context of slaughterhouses in rural North Carolina, including her work featured in the book 'On the Line: Slaughterhouse Lives Making New South.' She has received the ASA Labor Movements Book Award and honorable mention from the Latino Studies Section of the Latin American Studies Association. Her research demonstrates the complex incorporation of Latina/o migrants and highlights the role of social organization and the 'prismatic' character of white supremacy in the interplay between Latina/o migrant and African American workers. Ribas also examines contemporary political subjectivities of Puerto Ricans within the colonial legacies of American social science knowledge production. Her scholarly work has been published in leading academic journals, including the American Sociological Review, Social Science Medicine, and Sociological Perspectives.
