Biography

Vanessa Cook is a lecturer specializing in Economic and Social History with a focus on reproductive health, gender, and the history of emotions. Her PhD research analyzed the experiences of married couples navigating infertility and reproductive loss in mainland Britain, culminating in a thesis titled 'Understanding Experiences of Miscarriages, Stillbirths, Infertility, Late 1950s to 1974.' Her broad research interests encompass oral history, gender history, reproductive health, and the emotional aspects of grief and trauma. She is particularly interested in the material culture of emotions and the role of support organizations and self-help groups, as well as nostalgia and the collection of youth culture memorabilia. In her teaching role, she has developed innovative approaches, particularly for Graduate Teaching Assistant support and Widening Participation programs in Higher Education, and has co-convened a summer school program in Economic and Social History for three years. Cook is engaged in projects aimed at enhancing student retention and has served as a PhD supervisor for students focused on reproductive health and emotional history.
