Vanessa Freije is an Associate Professor with a joint appointment in the Department of History and the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington. Her research focuses on the interplay of media and politics in Latin America, with a particular emphasis on Mexico. Freije's book, 'Citizens Scandal: Journalism, Secrecy, Politics Reckoning Mexico,' published in October 2020 by Duke University Press, won the American Historical Association’s Eugenia M. Palmegiano Prize for History Journalism. The book explores how media scandals have shaped social imaginaries and forged new modes of political engagement from the 1960s to the 1980s. In addition to her book, Freije has authored several articles on rumors and the formation of the public sphere, contributing to prominent journals such as the Hispanic American Historical Review and the Journal of Social History. Her research has been recognized with awards from various associations, including the Latin American Studies Association and the American Journalism History Association. Currently, Freije is developing a new project that investigates the history of communications satellites in Mexico, examining the significance of the country’s connection and disconnection from the global space race.
