Biography

Vasileios Chatzaras is a Senior Lecturer in Geology at the University of Sydney. His research focuses on developing an understanding of the structure and deformation rheology of the Earth's lithosphere, particularly in urban settings. His work has applications in mapping deep mineral systems, assessing seismic risk, and urban planning. Chatzaras originally hails from Greece, where he obtained his PhD in Structural Geology and Tectonics from the University of Patras in 2010. Following his doctoral studies, he engaged in postdoctoral research at various institutions, including Boston College and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, before relocating to Australia in 2018. He has received funding from the Australian Research Council and the US National Science Foundation for his research endeavors. Among his research interests are Structural Geology, Tectonics, and Urban Geology, with significant contributions to understanding lithospheric rheology and seismic properties. He is also involved in undergraduate teaching in courses related to Earth Science and Geology and has supervised a number of graduate students in their research projects.
