Dr. Vassilis Zannis

Biography

Vassilis Zannis is an Emeritus Professor at Boston University in the Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, specializing in Cardiovascular Medicine. He has an extensive academic background, including a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Athens. His research primarily focuses on the structural functions of apolipoproteins such as apoA-I and apoE, their roles in HDL biogenesis, atherosclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease. Zannis has made significant contributions to understanding how apoA-I mutations and the biogenesis of HDL influence dyslipidemia and cholesterol metabolism. He uses advanced methodologies including adenovirus-mediated gene transfer in his studies. As a mentor, he guides graduate students in the Graduate Medical Sciences at Boston University. His work is well recognized, evidenced by multiple NIH grants, and he is actively involved in interdisciplinary biomedical research.
