Biography

Vaughn Mangal is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Brock University. His research group focuses on the molecular properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and soil organic matter (SOM), particularly in relation to land use, climatic changes, and the relationships between organic matter and metal transport. Mangal's work explores the effects of forest fires, permafrost thaw, and agriculture on the cycling of metals in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. He specializes in microbial metabolomics, investigating the metabolic adaptations of algae that have developed to aid metal tolerance. Mangal's research utilises both targeted and untargeted mass spectrometry-based techniques to identify human impacts on fundamental biogeochemical cycles and their implications for water quality. He earned his PhD in Environmental Life Sciences from Trent University in 2019 and has held postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Toronto Scarborough. His contributions to environmental science are reflected in numerous publications, including studies on mercury methylation and organic matter characterization.
