Dr. Veena Sahajwalla

Biography

Scientia Professor Veena Sahajwalla is an internationally recognized materials scientist and engineer who has pioneered innovative recycling technologies. As the founding Director of the Centre for Sustainable Materials Research and Technology (SMaRT) at the University of New South Wales, she works at the intersection of materials science and environmental sustainability. Her research focuses on transforming waste into valuable resources and developing microfactories that facilitate local recycling of materials. With more than 380 peer-reviewed publications, Veena is known for cutting-edge contributions to green manufacturing solutions and has received multiple awards for her innovative approaches to recycling and sustainability. Notably, her work led to the establishment of e-waste and plastics microfactories that represent significant breakthroughs in recycling technology. An elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, Veena's expertise is frequently sought for leadership roles in research initiatives aimed at achieving sustainable development through innovative material transformations. She continually engages in public discourse about the importance of recycling and sustainability through various media appearances and mentorship programs for young girls in science.
