Biography

Velda Elliott is a Professor in English Education and the Director of Graduate Studies at St Hilda's College, University of Oxford. She primarily works in the field of English (L1) Education, focusing on methods of teaching and assessing literature and exploring the interaction between books and society. Her research interests include equity and representation in education, particularly in unsettling the imperialist legacies within the English curriculum. Velda has led research reports on Lit Colour and remains engaged in advocacy work surrounding these issues. She serves as an editor for the Oxford Review of Education and as an Associate Editor for English Education, and co-convenes the Race and Coloniality in Education Research Group. Additionally, she leads the Qualitative Methods Hub in her department. Velda has been honored with various awards, including the National Association for the Teaching of English's Award for Outstanding Contribution to Research and the UKLA Academic Book Award. She is also a recipient of an International Fellowship at the University of Adelaide and has delivered the Harold Rosen Memorial Lecture. Velda is open to supervising doctoral students interested in research areas related to English L1 education, race, gender, sexuality, and decoloniality.
