Dr. Vera Hirsh

Biography

Vera Hirsh is an Emeritus Professor at McGill University known for her extensive work in the field of oncology, particularly lung cancer. She studied medicine at Charles University in Prague from 1965 to 1971 and underwent postgraduate training at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Dr. Hirsh joined McGill University in 1979 and over her career has ascended through the academic ranks to become a full professor. In addition to her academic role, she has served as Chief of the Hematology-Oncology Clinical Service at Santa Cabrini Hospital in Montreal. She is recognized internationally for her leadership in lung cancer treatment and has authored over 120 scientific papers, which have been cited more than 1,700 times annually in the past decade. Her notable contributions include the development of a chemotherapy regimen for advanced lung cancer that has become mainstream in North America, known as the 'Hirsh' regimen. Dr. Hirsh has participated in numerous clinical trials and has been an active lecturer and keynote speaker at prestigious conferences worldwide. She has played a significant role in developing treatment guidelines and has mentored many physicians who now lead in oncology and respiratory medicine.
