Dr. Verity Platt

Biography

Verity Platt is a Professor in the Department of Classics at Cornell University, specializing in Greek and Roman art history. Her research explores the relationship between ancient literary and visual cultures, particularly during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Platt has held various fellowships, including at the Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton and Trinity College in Cambridge. In addition to her academic pursuits, she is the director of Cornell's Humanities Scholars Program, which fosters independent and interdisciplinary research in the humanities among undergraduate students. Platt has published extensively, with works focusing on ancient theories of image, media, historiography of ancient art, and the material culture of religion. Her upcoming monograph, "Epistemic Impressions: Making Mediating Classical Art Text," examines how ancient authors formulated relationships between texts and objects. Platt has also curated exhibitions that highlight contemporary art and the classical tradition, working collaboratively with various institutions to engage students and the public in classical studies. Her commitment to teaching and mentorship has been recognized through awards like the Stephen H. Weiss Presidential Fellow Award at Cornell.
