Dr. Veronica Root Martinez

Biography

Veronica Root Martinez is a nationally recognized expert in organizational ethics, corporate misconduct, and compliance. She is a leading academic authority on the use of monitorships and her interdisciplinary research shapes the practices of ethics, compliance, and governance in public and private sector organizations. In particular, she focuses on equipping organizations to foster ethical cultures, adhere to legal and regulatory mandates, and create inclusive workplace environments. At Duke University, Martinez holds the Simpson Thacher & Bartlett Distinguished Professorship of Law with a courtesy appointment at the Fuqua School of Business. Her teaching portfolio includes courses on Contracts, Ethics in Professional Responsibility, Securities Litigation, Enforcement, Compliance, and a Legal Scholarship Seminar. Additionally, she teaches Judicial Ethics in the Bolch Judicial Studies LL.M. program and Ethics Management at Fuqua. Martinez previously served as the Robert & Marion Short Scholar and Professor of Law at Notre Dame Law School, where she became the first Black woman to receive tenure. Her contributions have earned her multiple awards, including the Distinguished Professor of the Year award. She has published scholarly work in numerous legal journals and is a co-author of a casebook on Securities Litigation. She is also a member of various legal organizations including the American Bar Association and the American Law Institute.
