Dr. Victor Alvarez

Biography

Victor E. Alvarez, MD is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. He obtained his medical degree from St. George's University School of Medicine and completed his residency in Anatomic Clinical Pathology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. He furthered his training with a fellowship in Oncologic Surgical Pathology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and additional fellowships in General Surgical Pathology at Danbury Hospital and Neuropathology at Brown University. Dr. Alvarez manages laboratory and Brain Bank operations at the Bedford VA Hospital and the Jamaica Plain VA Hospital. His research focuses on the relationship between neurotrauma and neurodegenerative diseases, emphasizing the standardization of Brain Banking protocols. He actively participates in studies related to brain banks, including those at the Boston University Alzheimer’s Disease Center, the CTE Center, and the Framingham Heart Study. Dr. Alvarez is a member of the College of American Pathologists and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, and he has received awards from the American Association of Neuropathologists for his contributions to the field. His work also includes investigating chronic traumatic encephalopathy and its implications within the VA Healthcare System.
