Victor Arizpe was born in Madero, Texas, in a Mexican-American community several miles south of Mission, Texas. He graduated from Mission High School in 1964 and joined the U.S. Air Force in 1965, receiving an honorable discharge in 1969. In 1972, he earned his B.A. in Spanish from Pan American University in Edinburg, Texas, and subsequently pursued his Ph.D. at the University of Michigan, which he completed in 1982. Dr. Arizpe began his academic career at Ohio State University before joining Texas A&M University in 1983. He is a recipient of the Ford Foundation Fellowship for Mexican Americans and the Ford Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellowship in 1988. Dr. Arizpe's research focuses on Peninsular Spanish language literature, particularly Golden Age Spanish prose, drama, and poetry, as well as rhetorical studies and Spanish American colonial literature. Throughout his teaching career, he has been recognized with the Faculty Distinguished Achievement Award for Teaching from the Association of Students at Texas A&M University in 1990. In 1992, he was honored by students with a naming recognition for “Fish Camp,” acknowledging his commitment to teaching. He also served in various administrative roles, including Interim Head of the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and founding Director of the International Studies Degree Program. Dr. Arizpe is a founding member of the Mexican American U.S. Latino Faculty Association at Texas A&M and has been a member of the Texas A&M University Press Editorial Board since 2006, as well as the Advisory Board for Clásicos Hispánicos in Spain.
